Dolmen e Menhir

The Menhir, Dolmen and together with the Mirror (born as beacons used during the Neolithic hunting and has evolved into real communication systems). They are also found in Puglia, and especially in the Salento. In the province of Lecce, are scattered everywhere.

Each center has at least a menhir. In the town of Giurdignano, near Otranto, even if they count more than 15 copies.

For Martano, the province of Lecce, there is the presence of the highest standing stones of Italy, the "Menhir de Santu Totaru" of more than 5 meters in height. The menhirs of Salento were in the Middle Ages, converted to Christianity affected the stone crosses. Even today in some countries there is the custom, on Palm Sunday, to which end of the processions in the vicinity of standing stones which are blessed olive branches.
